Which Replacement Window Style Fits Your Opening?

Style tends to follow the opening and the room.

• Awning windows hinge at the top and tilt out, giving the unobstructed view of a fixed picture window plus ventilation. Good for bedroom and bathroom openings and security-sensitive spots, and the open sash shades the glass in summer.
• Fixed window replacement is the most energy-efficient option, since a window that doesn’t open minimizes air leakage. It pairs well with a slider or casement so part of the assembly still vents.
• Double and single slider windows run horizontally, with one or both sashes operable. They suit openings wider than they are tall, and the sashes tilt inward so the exterior glass gets cleaned from inside.
• Double and single-hung tilt windows vent from the top or bottom on the double, while the single fixes the top sash and slides the bottom up. Either tilts in for cleaning.

What’s the Difference Between a Bay Window and a Bow Window?

A bay window is three units, a bow is four or more. The bay typically projects at a 45 degree angle, with the center usually fixed for a large unobstructed view, though an awning window works there depending on size and design preference, and the side units can be casements or hung windows. The bow’s equal-sized units curve more gently, and while they can all be fixed, many prefer the end units to vent. Either one gives your home space for a sitting area or a place for plants.

The single-hung, with its fixed top sash and traditional proportions, suits a heritage-style home where preserving the look and the value matters, and the tilt-in sash means no ladder for a second-floor clean.
